As part of the ministry of Stone Presbyterian Church, the Kairos Center has offered professional counseling services by licensed marriage and family counselors since 1978. Counseling is provided on an adjustable fee basis for individuals, couples, and families, some of whom are in the midst of crisis, while others are simply seeking ways to work creatively with the growing edges of their lives. The counseling work is based on two things: first, a deep valuing of the spiritual as well as the psychological/emotional/physical aspects of our lives; and second, the belief that the difficulties in our lives can be transformed into positive learning experiences, enabling us to discover more of our own wholeness. A recent expansion of Kairos Center work is a pre-marital counseling program initiated by our head pastor, Art Mills, and approved by Session. Recognizing that creating and sustaining loving relationships is vitally important, and that all of us need support doing this, Stone Church is now providing every couple being married in our church with three pre-marital sessions with one of our licensed counselors. The focus is on enhancing communication, exploring significant relationship issues, sharing expectations about marriage and relationship, and learning more about each other's interactional patterns and personality styles. This service is included in the cost of a wedding at Stone Church and is one of the ways that our church is working to support couples and families both within our church and in the larger community.
