Pastor's Message
April, 2003

"And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; You shall be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of streets to dwell in."
- Isaiah 58: 11-12
In times of "war's alarms and deadly pestilence," the Word offers us a critical corrective to our grief, worry and discouragement. God promises to guide us and lead us to rebuild, repair and restore. Remember? God's reign is real even if we only catch it in glimpses. Remember?

This Lent, let us listen for God's creative plea amidst the noise of CNN, our own self-defeating behaviors and habits, and the busyness of Silicon Valley. We may need to mend a broken relationship. We may need to cultivate a more rhythmic pattern of prayer. We may need to respond to issues of hunger and justice.

This Lent, you and I are invited to participate in a powerful and historic witness to our Faith - our Christian hope in hard times. We are being asked to "raise up the foundations" for a nursery, Christian Education wing and social hall.

In the larger church too, I frequently go to the PCUSA.org web site - where I am reminded of efforts at restoration and rebuilding in Afghanistan and elsewhere. I know that we will be present for the Iraqi victims of war as well.

When we allow ourselves to be shaped by God's word, we find the power to participate in the new reign where feet are washed, bread is shared, and where rejoicing is still possible amid suffering. May it be so for us...

Rebecca
