Mary Johnson, Parish Nurse
The Healing Church Healing and spirituality have been central to religious experience for centuries. Biblically a focus on health, cleanliness, and well-being is clearly expressed both in the Old Testament code of Leviticus and in Jesus' miracles of restoration to wholeness. The healing of brokenness, the restoration to life in fullness, is clearly a part of what it means "to be in Christ." Healing and health are central dimensions of the faith we progress and the vocation to which we are called as Christians. The Role of Parish Nursing Parish nursing focuses on the whole person to emphasize wellness, health promotion, and disease prevention. It affirms the healing ministry of the church, encompasses a holistic approach to care, and empowers people for wholeness and health - in body, mind and spirit. Parish nursing is focused on:
In 1988, the General Assembly adopted the policy statement: Life Abundant: Values, Choices and Health Care - The Responsibility and Role of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The General Assembly has challenged us "to become vigorous and conscious promoters of health in all aspects in the life of the church, active advocates and agents of health in the social order, and responsible stewards of both health and health resources." Parish Nursing at Stone Church Mary Johnson is our parish nurse. She takes blood pressure readings in the Church Office the first Sunday morning of each month. She also organizes special Adult Education classes focused on health issues. |
